Mount Waverley Orthodontics is a long-established orthodontic practice that has been renamed and relocated more than 14 years ago.
Over the past 40 years, our orthodontists have included Dr John Poole, Dr Bart Borghesi, Dr Mark Russell and Dr Sven Axelson. Dr Chia Ling Chou joined the practice in 2003 and has since taken over. At our practice, Dr Chou personally manages the entire treatment process.
Dr Chou's Qualifications
Dr Chou completed her Bachelor of Dental Science Degree at the University of Melbourne in 1995. She then worked as a general dentist for a few years prior to completing a three year Master of Dental Science (Orthodontics) in 2000. She is a registered specialist in Orthodontics, a member of Australian Dental Association and Australian Society of Orthodontics.
Dr Chou decided to become an orthodontist because she enjoys the ongoing nature of the speciality, working with both adults and children. She also finds it very rewarding to observe growth and development in children and teenagers over time.
About Orthodontics
Orthodontics is the area of dentistry dedicated to the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of malocclusion (bad bite) and irregularities of the teeth and jaw.
Orthodontists are speciality dentists who limit their practice exclusively to providing orthodontic care. Their treatments may involve the use of corrective appliances (e.g. braces, clear aligners, plates and functional appliance) to bring teeth and jaws into proper alignment.
Why Is Orthodontic Treatment Needed?
People have orthodontic treatment not only to improve the appearance but also the health and function of their teeth and jaw.
Appearance
Most people are very self-conscious of how their teeth look when they smile. For many, having straight teeth and an attractive smile may enhance self-esteem.
Hygiene
It can be hard to keep your teeth clean if they are crowded or overlapping. This can lead to tooth decay and gum problems. Straight teeth are much easier to clean.
Tooth Wear and Gum Damage
Some occlusions (bites) may lead to clenching, grinding and excessive wear of teeth or damage to gum tissue. A proper bite will preserve the integrity of your teeth.
